A magical guide to MYTH & MEMORY

Una guía mágica sobre la mitología y la memoria

מדריך קסום למיתוס וזיכרון

Three women, three time periods, three regimes: one family full of secrets.

Meet Javiera, a dreamer, as all teenagers should be. Her parents came to Perth from Chile, or so she believes. She hangs at the beach in 2003, wondering how she came to be.

Then there’s Mayim, a modern woman in a modern town. In Edinburgh, Scotland, working sun up ‘til sun down. Head of the UK’s biggest trade union, but her life’s not in balance. Too much time in the office ignoring the Sabbath.

Finally, there’s Cote, grounded and calm, but pulled between two worlds has caused her great harm. In 1970s Chile, tyranny is bubbling. A new life in Scotland is calling, but the journey there will be troubling.

A Magical Guide to Myth and Memory is an epic musical journey across oceans. A fascinating story based on historical events - the Chilean dictatorship, the Jewish diaspora in the UK, and the second generation Australian experience - it follows three women in three different times and places as they discover untold family truths. When a trunk of family secrets falls open, other-worldy chaos ensues. Enter angry mermaids, trees full of wisdom, and messages travelling on the wind that whips the sand dunes. With a little magic and a lot of heart, this show transports audiences effortlessly through time and place as mysterious forces and remnants of regimes try to keep these three women disconnected in the dark. The question is, will they be able to find each other, and find the light? Expect myth, music, magic, humour, and a dash of history, as you are guided on a multicultural voyage to find out what happens to families when secrets are kept too long and memories are lost at sea.

It was captivating. The music...the humour, the languages, the sense of place. Don’t change a thing!
